Status Update, Fences + Multiplayer

Ahoy-hoy world builders!

We’ve been a little quiet over the past few weeks, so it’s high time we put out some news. The short version is that Multiplayer is complete, and the patch should be availible in about a week, if everything goes to plan and CraftWorld is getting Fences in v2.10!

BlockWorld News:

The multiplayer for BlockWorld is complete, and sessions may be hosted on Xbox live (When you get v1.1 of course) or over LAN. Signs, dyes, bombs, arrows and loads more stuff works great over the internet in worlds. There are 5 new dye colors, mostly grays for you to use, and lots of performance improving fixes in. After updating, the view distance will double, and the jittering some of you may have noticed is gone.

The list of what’s fixed is simply huge, and will be posted soon. Please bear in mind that the Combat gametype is not yet complete. You can knock each other out with weapons, and taunt each other, but scoring and more advanced rules is coming later. When starting a new world, please start by building a huge tower. It’s very easy to get lost.

CraftWorld News:

The aforementioned camera fixes, and stability improvements mostly came in v2.9 a few weeks ago. There are still many more fixes inbound in v2.10, which will be submitted at the end of this week. Things such as the signs not saving contents, and dyes being lost when a world is updated (Thanks Bokchoy for working with us to find those issues) are just a few things fixed.

But as users such as Serkan seem to be more than happy to point out, you guys would also like some new toys. So Daniel broke out the Code-Fu and got fences working in v2.10 in less than a day! They have 1.5 height collision, to keep things in, but can also be stacked to create cages and poles going straight up. There are also gates that can be added to fences. Unlike a door, they open in two directions, when stacked, gates above and below open as though they were one huge gate. We’ve also begun work on the permutations system. We’ve had requests for wood slabs, Adamantium slabs, timber slabs, sandstone slabs etc… so we’re adding all of those, as well as half a dozen different fence types! Good for survival mode, and great for creative mode!

So that wraps things up for now. As a side note, BlockWorld will be receiving fences and gates in v1.2. The improvements to the Hazzah Engine go both ways.

    Are you planning to use the texturepack MeineKraft now ? That was my question.
    is it impossible to add all of the texturepack in 64×64 ? It would be in HD by a resolution of 480×640 ! is it difficult to add a texturepack ?

      Hey Serkan, we’ve had bloom in the game since January! Got to options, graphics and turn it up to high! If you have a 1st gen handset, it will have defaulted to off.

      Golden tools will come later, but Adamantium will arrive first.

      There is no pipeline for users adding texture packs, and there is some support for us having multiples. It would be a days work, but it’s not a high priority. But it IS on the list.

      I honestly find the Discovery pack a bit gaudy and bright for my liking, and with the bloom turned on, the CW pack is pretty bright. Let me know after you check out bloom.

    I love the game, I play on the Windows 7 version, and earlier I made an alarming discovery that my house, its tower, my huge basement, my backyard and almost everything I placed, dug out and built was gone! I don’t know if it will help but I was playing on survival mode. Also, there are new bugs like I can’t die, sometimes I randomly float and as I stated earlier, my things keep disappearing. I just wanted to let you know. Also, my House was made so it was impossible for zombies to get in. My tower on my house reached the sky and had a walkway to get up it, the front door had a cross on top of it, my basement went around and down for thousands of blocks and there was even a living quarters! I don’t know if you’ve ever played Fallout 3, but I was trying to replicate a vault. I play on the paid version. If you fix the bug let me know please. Thank you for your time.

      Hey Mathew, that sounds like a cool world. Can you please double check what version of the game you are running? Because that sounds exactly like a v2.8 bug, and v2.9 fixed what you are having trouble with. Also, can you upload your world to the cloud and tell me what slot, and if your email matches your comment’s email address?

      Also, is your house well lit? Because Zombies can spawn in the dark…

    I checked, I am playing on v2.9. My house was very well lit, it is in slot two.
    I also left the place of my house in search of a forest, as in a place with many trees.

      Hey Michael… I’ve been having the want thing! If I die about 6/7 times plus, I can’t die! Then I have to delete it because its not exciting anymore!! And sometimes, I float up in mid-air, also when I do that, zombies and sheep and pigs are flying round in circles!!! I’m on v2.9, I checked… Also, if you want to trap a zombie in a cage(for a zoo or something) it disapears, even if you save it!! Same to you? Or just me… My houses don’t go, but yeah. Hope this helped!

        Hey Kay,

        Your gravity is getting turned off, and you are set invulnerable. This is a problem in the startup of a world. Could you upload a world that has this issue and let me know if the email attatched to the comment matches your cloud storage account?

        Creatures have been saving for the past few months. With a save file I can see if this is a saving, loading or processing issue.

      Uh-Oh.

      It is impossible for us to get your password back. They are fully encrypted, and we can’t see anything but garble on our end. The cloud storage system is still in Alpha, so there is no password reset functionality yet. I’ll chat to Dan about this.

    What about multiplayer in the windows phone? Is it possible to have a online multiplayer? If it is how long will it take? Also if you add fences. Can you make animals save in the fences if it is enclosed so the mob doesn’t disappear when you exit out of the game?

      Yo Dawg,

      Animals already save. They have been saving since about v2.2, although whenever we do a save file change, we never convert their files, we just delete them. Nobody has ever noticed. But the save system is finalized sicne v2.9 CW / v1.1 BW, so that won’t be happening anymore.

      Multiplayer on the phone has a huge reply I could fill about 2 A4 pages writing out. The short answer is that Xbox gets dibbs on multiplayer first. We don’t get access to Xbox live on WP7, and local games need lots of special code. BlockWorld is getting Multiplayer, which is the same multiplayer engine as CW on WP7 will get, so play that if you want to help test it. Be sure to email us if you find anything wrong.

    No worries thank you..i shall play as normal until a fix is in place..pity you can’t delete the save profile from your end completely so I can re reg as it says device already registered when I try a different email addy.. Many thanks

    Uhh.. I couldn’t see the comment page on the last forums..
    Well ahem.
    You guys have a huge list of awesomeness but you’re doing fences.
    Don’t get me wrong, fences are cool.
    But one question.
    Can you guys get the neutral animals to spawn? I never see any pigs or sheep near me and its upsetting. Now I only have zombies for friundz. :c
    Anyways, my craftworld Paid crashed and I couldn’t get it to open, and couldn’t upload my world file. (like you said) the uploading thing is really in alpha, and could use a separate page of its own. Like I could check out all my saves, because I can’t see my saves right now.
    Back to the neutral animals, I can’t find chickens either.
    And can you have some GIGANTIC forest biomes spawn? I know the world generation mechanism is middle earth, (which I think is not something you coded from scratch, please correct me if I’m wrong) but is it possible?
    and I think you guys have overdone the minerals. I’m seeing lots of things.
    But this could be just me too.
    And you could have a separate texture packs folder, (which will take like 20 more days of coding. I’m like a little kid listing his dreams to Santa.) so that we could have a high quality texture pack like Serkan’s, and i could make a pretty simple one for high framerate.
    Like really simple.
    Look up the oCd pack for minecraft. Like simple as that, or simpler.

      Hey Tarik,

      Everyone wants different things. Fences, because they are not a 1x1x1 meter block, break up the world when used. As do slabs and stairs and posts. People from blockworld have asked for them also.

      Nuetral animals have vanished? I’ll check the spawn code, but they should be fine. Explore some new terrain, and be sure to kill off the zombies you find. Theres a creature cap, that may be completly overwhealmed by zombies for you right now.

      The crashes are in the physics system, and some involving calls to the phone OS. Those have been patched up in v2.10

      The cloud cannot be uploaded to right now, I discovered that about 30 minutes ago while debugging the new material properties system (and needed cloud access). I’ve emailed MS in regards to whats up with the access to the Cloud storage we use for the CraftWorld cloud.

      The minerals are indeed dialed up a bit. We tweaked the terrain to be more interesting, and the mineral count jumped. We’ll have another look at it.

      A low rez 8×8 rez pack replacing the current 32×32 would have the same performance impact as jumping to 256×256. All it would do is change memory use a bit. The framerate would be the same. Changing packs is an Asthetic thing. Are you saying you’d be cool with a selection of inbuilt textures for now, and later you’d love to see a texture importer? Becuase that sounds ideal.

      We could add a new tree generator, like L-Trees or something to the forests. But how would that be better than fences or more creatures? I’m not saying no, (Because I’ve wanted it for months) just trying to get you to understand all the requests go into a list, and each is evaluated against the others. We’ll be moving to the RPG features soon btw.

        Oh alright.
        I could try to make a pretty detailed text pack.
        I mean running some blocky games on my comp, the less the text rez, the better the framerate.
        I guess it works the same here but it’s like running the first release of minecraft.
        When i have time i would like to make a texture pack special for craftworld. How should i make it? Is there a specific template or program you would recommend?

      We’ll just have to disable a few incomplete features, and we should be right to submit tomorow. If microsoft is quick, then you’d get the update sometime on the weekend.

      But as usual, heres the “no definite date” disclaimer. Although I always put up a blogpost when the update is submitted, and passed. Similar for BlockWorld.

          It’s confusion like this that is making me wonder if a seperate news blog and site for BlockWorld is required. Keep the two isolated, and only have them mention each other from time to time…

    For Block World, are the smoothed lighting going to be in the update. And will the torches look like the torches in Craft World? BECAUSE i would like that. Will there soon be mechanics on the game like firing bomb crates from a distance ( something like wires and a switch or remote ) for safer detonation. That would be a great challenge. And im dying for this update to come out already. My friends are saying
    . ” Ugh why did you make me buy this game!?”
    I tell them it will it only get better. Soon better than Minecraft!

      The update process is going really really slowly. We’ve been contacting people, trying to push it forward. We’re doing everything we can to get the update out faster.

      Do you play CraftWorld AND BlockWorld? Because that makes things easier to explain (and you AWESOME)

      The torches from CraftWorld v2.9 (the stick ones) are coming to BlockWorld v1.1. So does the new smooth lighting.

      In v1.1, you can make dynamite explode by firing arrows at it too.
