Windows Phone 8 Update!

This is a big one, so strap in.

We at 2.0 Studios got our greasy paws on a Nokia Lumia 920 today. These amazing handsets have been selling out constantly, with us missing out on ordering more from three additional shipments by only a few hours every few days! This means that we shall be branching CraftWorld out into the untamed wilds of the Windows Phone 8 platform.

The new Windows Phone 8 Nokia Lumia 920 we will be using to push CraftWorld into the future of WP!

The new Windows Phone 8 Nokia Lumia 920 we will be using to push CraftWorld into the future of WP!

What does this mean for current users?

If you are considering upgrading to a slick new Lumia, or any other 8 series handset for that matter, then CraftWorld will have some new tricks for your soon. If you recently moved to the Windows Phone platform, and are cool with your HTC Titan or Lumia 800, then relax. We will be supporting that platform as well.

What’s the difference between WP7 and WP8?

The two generations of OS will be virtually identical when the 7.8 update reaches the 7 series of handsets. This should be a clear indicator above all, that both systems are current and fantastic. However the WP8 devices have increased standards including increased memory, NFC and greater developer access to universal hardware features such as Bluetooth.

What makes 2.0 so sure WP8 is fantastic?

Two weeks ago, we attended a Melbourne Educational event run by Nokia, and organized by David Glover, a top bloke whom organizes educational events such as these, and wrangles up Aussie devs to make awesome stuff. We got to hear from some professional designers, developers, official Nokia Staff and other developers.

The "Dive Deep" workshop for WP8 in Melbourne. A VERY valuable experience!

This was a two day event, where we learnt about what we could build, what the new technology means for CraftWorld, and where Microsoft is going in the mobile space. One of the most exciting features, will be for us to use NFC to initiate a Bluetooth networked local multiplayer match by simply tapping the host’s handset with each of the clients.

We asked loads of questions, and even scored a prize! Dan was handed a Nokia emergency charger, a rechargeable stick, that can power up a phone twice. For something so simple, it is crafted so well, and feels so nice just to have. Go Nokia!

The short of the matter is that the future of CraftWorld has in-app purchases, NFC, Bluetooth, HD 720p graphics and a load more in its future. The Windows Phone 7 area has the Nokia 510 and emerging markets at the opposite end of the scale. I guess that would include well behaved kids with affordable handsets also?

What is best about the WP8 series?

Bluetooth and NFC support for multiplayer games, and the native shader support for rich PC quality graphics.

What is best about the WP7 series?

Our Big-ass user base, inexpensive handsets and the increasing Mobile market share of WP7.

When did you guys get a Lumia 800?

When the BETA version of CraftWorld was first released, there was a competition being run by non-other than David Glover. So Dan entered into that competition with CraftWorld v2.6, and received a Lumia 800 for the high Australian downloads it received!

It has been serving us faithfully for many months now. We’re crazy about Nokia devices.

I have more questions!

And I love answering them! Just comment below, or make a post over at the forums. It’s early days for the WP8 platform, but we are excited about this wonderful new technology and how the ever growing and improving CraftWorld can take advantage of it!

Is this the big announcement?

Hehe, keeping track of that are we? Naw, this aint it. Stay tuned, it’s gonna be huge! :D

  • Can we please craft in Creative mode and let us make make Connons or any fire arm? Thanks

    • Jarryd says:

Man, those kids playing BlockWorld would kill you right now. They are practically screaming for survival mode.

You mean a sort of “Arcade Survival” as a hybrid. More free form than survival with a lot more guidance and achievement than creative?

      Paintball guns are coming BTW.

  • And I Love Your game, Craft World!

  • Mikhail says:

I was gonna say I just got a windows 8 tab and that new windows 8 all in one touch PC and there both 1080p but before I install it will it work and will it be 1080p? nd I wish craftworld can be on ps3 unless you sell the games by disk don’t worry though we can still get updates too by disk cause when u pop in disk it will ask u to update it if u have the update ready by enternet. And u should get a wiiU because they are 101 times better than Wii plus it’s the first Nintendo system that is 1080p and comes with a HDMI too! I’m 14.

    • Jarryd says:

      Hello Mikhail that is 14.

The PS3 and WiiU don’t really interest us. The xbox is a much friendlier platform, with better hardware (dev perspective), and we have our hands full with PC and WP7/WP8. Nintendo are known for their core library of games. Mario, Metroid, Pokémon, Smash bros, Mario Kart and of course the Zeldas. It seems a bit dicey to try to release on such a platform. And the WiiU finally disposes of a recycled console designed in the 90s in favour of what would have been current gen in 2006. But there is also the Wii Mini being released, so what Nintendo are trying to achieve leaves me confused.

The Windows 8 tablets are pretty fucking sweet eh?

  • Matthew says:

What are the major differences of how this game runs on the Nokia Lumia 900 and the Nokia Lumia 920?

  • Matthew says:

The best part about the newer Nokia’s are there indestructability and great GPU and CPU. It runs Craftworld extraordinarily fast with graphics boosted to max.

  • Mikhail says:

yeah! will day and night be on 2.12 and when does it come out?

  • mikhail says:

Please explain the long answer why please?

  • Mikhail says:

You or y’all should create a app called “craftworld creater”. The reason I said this because people can create they own items like for example a laser that can melt ice and snow, a sink that can run water just by tapping it plus you can make the size, the color, texture and more. Uh and we can send y’all are items but we will have to test it on our own too and ya’ll. If someone else already sent u a same as the other it will not be accepted. And even you can use these as the next update too! Would u think that will be awesome!? Oh yeah one more thing when I got on marketplace I typed in craftworld then I tapped enter but I did not show up. The thing that did was them ratings, the box where the pics suppose to be, and I think that’s it unless Microsoft did something.

    • Jarryd says:

      Hey Mikhail,

I’m having trouble understanding what you are writing.

Are you suggesting a WP7 app where the community can suggest and rate ideas, kinda like a Digg or Reddit for CraftWorld ideas?

Or do you mean a “Simulator” for potential game mechanics?

Also, you should not have any trouble finding craftworld on the marketplace. What country are you from? I may need to look into that one.

  • Mikhail says:

    A simulater

    • Jarryd says:

      Mikhail,

Don’t take this the wrong way, but what you are asking for shows a lack of understanding of how games are made. Reading this blog is a good way to pick up some hardcore gamer knowledge.

Everything you see in a game, not just the big stuff like guns firing, other players looking around and the textures on the rocks, is handcrafted. Look closer. Why does gravity work? Why don’t people just float away? And furthermore, why would they float away? Why wouldn’t they just sit still? What system is making gravity, or even, NOT gravity happen? Look closer again. Why does that person even appear on your screen? 10 minutes earlier, that screen was showing a word document, a text message or another game. What is making that person appear?

Every little thing has to be added, piece by piece. From sounds, down to how things are “rendered”. Now zoom your mind back out to a full world simulator, where you can cut steel like cheese with a laser, and do anything.

That would be a lot of work!

  • Mikhail says:

Oh will I thought it would be fun to do that. How long did it take to create craftworld? I’m guessing 3 months…am I right? Plus is it okay if u can start selling things to people like toys and t’s?

    • Jarryd says:

Woah, if it was not for our prior conversation, I might be offended by that. CraftWorld has been in full time development since the end of 2010, which makes it almost 2 years. Take out the 9 month hiatus we had prior to CraftWorld WP7, and you’ve got a rough idea of how long and big this project is.

If you cruise the older posts on the forums, you’ll find posts by members such as Battletrax and Francisco talking about things like procdedurally generated cities, RPG systems and the Moon realm.

Half the battle has been building a solid block engine to power this huge game. And we’ve just about completed that.

  • CraftworldLover says:

Hey guys, few things needed. I cant get onto my account again and i have tried resetting the password but i haven’t received the email, therefor since i cant get on my account i have a few questions.

First the map, i have a red dot on the map and i am just wondering if that’s like a north cursor or something?

Second is also the map, When do you think you could put in a cursor for the res stone. i had a world where i got lost and I really missed my castle lol.

Those are really my only questions lol, other than that I still love the game and keep up the great work guys, if i had the money i would be buying the game/ donating!

    • Jarryd says:

      Hey CWL,

I’ve updated your password. Check your email.

The red dot is a north marker, it was a debug thing we left in because it was usefull. We need to do some work on the Map, but we have some big things in December to finish.

We’re really glad you’re enjoying it. CraftWorld really has some staying power with people. Don’t stress too much about donating or what have you. Just spread the word, and enjoy the game.

  • Naruto says:

PLEASE I BEG YOU PLEASE add these{quickly}: More monsters, day and night, beds, switch system, redstones, levers, pulleys, magma bucket, more docile creatures, multiplayer yeah that should do….. I REALLY WANT TO PLAY WITH MY FRIENDS.I really love craft world and i want it to beat survival craft (it exactly looks like minecraft pocket edition!) If these were in v2.13 of craftworld I AM THE HAPPIEST GUY and will be looking for an update very very soon and I am really curious abt the massive announcement. OK i know i have asked a lot. To be brief, Just speed up. If i offended you i really apologise………..OK?

    • Jarryd says:

      Haha, that’s cool man.

We attended a Microsoft/Nokia educational event recently to learn more about how we should do multiplayer on Windows Phone. It’s not as easy as on the Xbox (for us) but it will be really good for you guys.

What kind of phone do you have? And what kind of multiplayer are you talking about?

There are more Docile/Aggressive creatures going in v2.13 btw, with Boars, roosters and Rams being added.

Steel buckets are in progress, and lava is almost finished. Hang on for v2.14 for those ones.

  • Michael Leighton says:

    Hi Gang

Any news on password reset for my world on WP7 version please .

    Im Crying :’(

    • Jarryd says:

We have not yet implemented features such as password retrieval and reset for the Cloud Storage system. I’m really sorry about your lost password, but there is nothing I can do right now to fix it except to say this:

Do you know someone else with a WP7 device (Or WP8 device) that does not play CraftWorld? Make a new account on that device, and don’t forget the password!

The Cloud Storage is still in it’s “Preview” stage. I’ve edited the game code just now to make that clearer to other people, in case they don’t understand the word “Alpha”. There is a lot we need to update and change in this system. It will be an update all of it’s own, with full accounts and version tracking across multiple platforms.

I’m sorry I can’t be of more help Micheal!

  • Naruto says:

Thats nice man. I really love craftworld. cant wait for the next update. Just asking do you briefly when will i get the update. thanks :D

    • Jarryd says:

16th of December is the planned submission date for CraftWorld v2.13

It’s going to be a maintainence update mostly, however you will get spot shadows and the raft. :)

  • Mikhail says:

Can you add Xbox live on craftworld?

  • Brett says:

By “Windows Phone 8″ is Craftworld going to the whole Windows 8 store?
Will it be available on Windows RT?

  • Azrat says:

I really like the game, I play it on my Nokia Lumia 920!
I’ve only one thing that makes me disappointing sometimes.. I can’t play for long this game, cause it’s draining my battery a lot. The whole battery is empty after an hour..

I hope you get this fixed, I’m looking forward for the new features, Online, and so on :)

    • Jarryd says:

Wow those Nokia’s are selling well. We’ve got 3 now, and love em’

First, are you aware that new Nokias condition their batteries by discharging them during the first few weeks? This usually doubles your life.

Also, what are your settings? Cranking it to max will do that. Tone it back to 24fps, medium view distance for max effect.

      Also please post your settings.

  • Jade says:

I have a HTC 8x and can’t figure out the controls to play craftworld

    • Jarryd says:

V2.14 has a controls screen. BUT:

The little brown rect in the bottom left? That moves you like a thumbstick

The other one in the right? Moves the camera like a thumbstick.

Tap the icons on the right, and drag things around with your finger.

  • Joshua says:

Will the new updated version be supported on wp7.8?

  • GEORGE ROBERTSON says:

am I allowed to play wp7 games on my pc?

    • Jarryd says:

You could side load it on an emulator, but it would be a shitty experience you’d have to work very hard to make work.

There is no magical complete version of CraftWorld for PC in existence. It’s not out yet, because it’s not finished, as simple as that. Gamers yell “give it to me anyway”, but the truth is that if it’s bad for even the most subtle of reasons, it’s still bad. And gamers are brutally honest.

  • Yoloman says:

Oh ya. There is also another bug. When ever I enter a world, the doors are invisible. Pls fix it

  • Matt Tinsley says:

Dude, where the f*** is the update for craftworld WP7, its 2 months overdue with no signs of a release date, sorry for the rage but this is the 5th time I’ve asked about the update and all you’ve said is that there is day + night and smarter AI, which is great and all, but I HAVENT SEEN THIS COS ITS NOT BEEN UPDATED, I know you are getting more popularity + money from blockworld ‘n that, but the update for craftworld was scheduled for 16th march (I think) please, just ROLL out the update..
